October 24, (THEWILL) – Leicester City strengthened their position at the top of the Championship table with an eighth consecutive victory, defeating Sunderland 1-0 at home, thanks to James Justin’s first-half header.
The full-back rose highest to convert Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s cross from a 12th-minute corner for his first league goal in over two years. Leicester dominated the match, hitting the woodwork twice in the opening 45 minutes and creating several chances to extend their lead.
However, Sunderland goalkeeper, Anthony Patterson, made some excellent saves to keep the score down, including a 39th-minute left-footer from Kelechi Iheanacho. The visitors’ best opportunity fell to substitute Abdoullah Ba late on, but he fired over from close range, much to Leicester’s relief.
With the win, Leicester have now collected 12 victories from their opening 13 league matches this season and boast the division’s best defensive record. In contrast, Sunderland’s third straight defeat leaves Tony Mowbray’s side struggling for form.
While Leicester were unable to add to their slender advantage, Justin’s goal was enough to claim another vital three points and strengthen their position at the summit. The Foxes now hold an eight-point lead after their flawless start though second-placed Ipswich have two matches in hand.
