June 07, (THEWILL) – Juventus have made a definitive announcement that it will withdraw from the controversial European Super League project.
THEWILL recalls that Juve, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, had previously remained committed to the ill-fated venture that was unveiled in 2021. The Super League initially attracted the participation of nine other prominent clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid. However, due to vehement opposition from their supporters, these clubs eventually decided to back out.
The decision by La Vecchia Signora to abandon the Super League, comes at a time when the club is grappling with the repercussions of alleged financial irregularities. In the 2022/2023 Serie A season, the Turin-based team was dealt a severe blow when they were hit with a 10-point deduction and fined €718,000. In response to circulating rumors about UEFA threatening expulsion from European competitions, Juventus issued a statement refuting such claims.
They clarified that discussions have been initiated among the three remaining clubs – Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus – regarding the potential withdrawal of the latter from the Super League project. The club insisted that many media reports on the matter were inaccurate.
Meanwhile, additional uncertainty looms over the Allianz Stadium as speculations arise regarding the future of Juventus’ manager, Massimiliano Allegri. The Italian’s position is being assessed with the sudden availability of former defender Igor Tudor enticing Juventus officials. Tudor recently declared his departure from Marseille after the conclusion of the Ligue 1 season, presenting a potential option for the Turin outfit to consider.
