September 23, (THEWILL) – Juventus were dealt a blow in their bid to go top of Serie A after slumping to a 4-2 defeat away at Sassuolo on Saturday.
The visitors had made an unbeaten start to the campaign but came unstuck at the Mapei Stadium. Sassuolo took an early lead through Armand Lauriente before Matias Vina scored an own goal to inadvertently level the scores for Juve.
Domenico Berardi then put the hosts back in front on the stroke of half-time with a fine curling strike for his 300th Serie A appearance. Juve appealed in vain for a penalty after the break before substitute Samuel Iling-Junior injected life into their attack.
Fellow substitute Nicolo Fagioli set up Federico Chiesa to equalise with 12 minutes left but Sassuolo were soon back ahead when Andrea Pinamonti converted the rebound after Lauriente’s shot was saved.
Bizarrely, Juve defender, Federico Gatti, then knocked into his own net in stoppage time after receiving a rushed free-kick from goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to round off Sassuolo’s surprise 4-2 victory.
