November 25, (THEWILL) – England captain Harry Kane etched his name into the Bundesliga history books by becoming the highest scoring Englishman in a single season. Kane’s 18th league goal gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 victory away at struggling Cologne to send the Bavarian giants top of the table over Bayer Leverkusen.
The 30-year-old striker has been in scintillating form since his summer switch from Tottenham Hotspur, notching 22 goals in 17 matches across all competitions. His Bundesliga haul beats the previous English record of 17 set by Kevin Keegan in 1978/1979 with Hamburg and matched by Jadon Sancho in 2019/2020 for Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern dominated the match but a combination of wayward finishing and inspired goalkeeping kept the score down. Thomas Tuchel’s men were nearly gifted an early opener when Timo Hubers almost turned the ball into his own net. However, on 20 minutes, Kane pounced on the rebound after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s shot was blocked to grab the winner.
Second-bottom Cologne offered little going forward, with Manuel Neuer only forced into one meaningful save. The visitors should have made it more emphatic in the second period but chances went begging. Leroy Sane was denied by the frame of the goal late on as Bayern professionally saw out victory.
The result, built on yet another Kane goal, sends the Bavarian giants top for the first time this campaign as the Englishman’s record-breaking Bundesliga debut season is set to continue with only a third of the season gone.
