February 04, (THEWILL) – The Kano State Government has pledged to investigate the alleged killing of protesters during the demolition of buildings at Rimin Zakara, on the outskirts of the state capital, on Sunday.
A combined team of security operatives allegedly opened fire during the demolition, resulting in the deaths of four persons and injuries to several others.
The affected buildings were reportedly erected illegally on land belonging to Bayero University, Kano.
Eyewitnesses claimed four protesters were killed during the incident.
However, the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Wayya, confirmed three fatalities, citing figures provided by security agencies.
“The operation was conducted at the request of Bayero University, Kano the rightful owner of the land, to evacuate illegal occupants,” Wayya stated.
According to him, disputes over the land have persisted for about 40 years, with previous attempts by BUK to remove illegal structures proving unsuccessful.
“Despite notices served to the illegal occupants, they remained defiant and allegedly engaged hoodlums who attacked security personnel,” he added.
Wayya emphasised that the confirmed death toll stands at three, contrary to earlier reports of four fatalities.
He assured that the state government would launch a thorough investigation to uncover the root causes of the violence and ascertain the actual number of casualties.
