March 26, (THEWILL) – Denmark’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024 have taken an early hit, after a shock 3-2 loss to Kazakhstan on Sunday.
The Danish team had been in fine form, beating Finland 3-1 in their opening qualifier, but couldn’t maintain their momentum in the second game. Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund was once again the star of the show, scoring twice in the first half to put Denmark 2-0 up.
However, the Kazakhstan did not let their heads drop. Instead, they fought back, with Baktiyor Zainutdinov scoring a penalty to set up a tense finish. With just four minutes to play, Kazakhstan leveled the scores with a stunning long-range strike from captain Askhat Tagybergen.
Then, in the dying moments of the game, substitute Abat Aimbetov nodded in the winner, although he was later sent off. The result was a bitter blow for Denmark, who will now need to regroup and refocus ahead of their next qualifier. As for Kazakhstan, it was a memorable victory against one of Europe’s top teams.
