Chepngetich

October 13, (THEWILL) – Kenyan marathoner Ruth Chepngetich obliterated the women’s marathon world record in Chicago on Sunday, clocking an unofficial time of two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds. This extraordinary performance shattered the previous best by nearly two minutes, setting a new benchmark in long-distance running.

The 2019 world champion dominated the race from the outset, establishing a commanding lead by the halfway point. Chepngetich maintained an exceptional pace throughout the course, drawing astonishment from commentators, who likened her sub-2:10 marathon attempt to historic achievements. Her relentless momentum culminated in a sprint through the final two miles.

Ethiopian athlete Sutume Kebede claimed second place, crossing the finish line seven minutes and 36 seconds after Chepngetich. Kenyan runner Irine Cheptai secured third position with a time of 2:17:51. The victor dedicated her performance to compatriot Kelvin Kiptum, who had set the men’s world record in Chicago just a year prior.

Chepngetich’s triumph marked her third title in Chicago, solidifying her status as a dominant force in marathon running. The event commenced with a solemn moment of silence, honouring the memory of Kiptum, who tragically died in a car crash four months after his record-setting run.

“World record was in my mind”, Chepngetich stated in televised remarks, expressing her affection for the Chicago course.
