August 18, (THEWILL) – Since Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek has not played all that well, and in Cincinnati, Madison Keys outperformed her to knock her out of the competition in straight sets 6-3 6-4.
After Wimbledon, Swiatek was unsuccessful at Poland’s clay event competition, which Caroline Garcia ended up winning. She then travelled to Toronto, where she was again easily defeated. Against Madison Keys, she faced a player who, when playing well, can beat the best because of her aggressive style of play that is challenging to counter.
Swiatek was erratic and had trouble managing the rallies. Although Keys got off to a sluggish start, she easily outperformed Swiatek in the last stretch to win the first set 6-3. The American smacked the ball quite cleanly in the opening moments of the second set, and Swiatek was unable to control it.
Keys lost that game on her serve despite being ahead 5-0 and 40-15 before Swiatek increased the score to 5-2 and broke Keys once more to bring it back to 5-4. But, Swiatek dropped her serve once more, giving up the chance to tie the game at 5-5 as Keys won 6-4 to knock Swiatek out.
Prior to the US Open, Keys and her team will be happy with her improvement after making it to the quarterfinal round.
