February 15, (THEWILL) – Jurgen Klopp has called on Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, to learn from the findings of an independent review into organisational issues that took place during last season’s Champions League final.
THEWILL recalls that the report found that UEFA, the French Football Federation and local police authorities were responsible for the chaos that led to the showpiece match between Liverpool and Real Madrid being delayed twice. The report also revealed that safety and security should be at the forefront of planning, and matches should be managed with a “facilitation and service” approach towards supporters.
Liverpool have demanded action from UEFA following what the report described as a “near-miss” and have called for a turning point in the treatment of fans. Klopp believes that it was important for the report to reveal the true events of the evening and that it would prevent similar issues from arising in the future.
The German Manager expressed relief that it is now official that UEFA was to blame, as he and other Liverpool supporters knew that allegations of fake tickets were false. Klopp has called on UEFA and others to learn from the events of that day and to ensure that safety is prioritised, even when there is time pressure to make decisions.
The report set out 21 recommendations to avoid such incidents, including venue choice and prioritising safety and security.
