May 30, (THEWILL) –Â Madison Keys has been eliminated from the French Open after Veronika Kudermetova’s amazing comeback triumph at Roland-Garros in their Monday match.
Keys appeared to have profited from her gruelling third-round fight against Elena Rybakina, returning to action and picking up where she left off in her previous round. The American controlled the opening stages of the first set with a powerful serve game after taking an early break.
Keys blitzed through the first set, winning it 6-1, with an 81 percent victory percentage on her first serve points, leaving Kudermetova with a lot of work to do.
On Court Philippe-Chatrier, though, the Russian flipped the script and broke Keys early in the second set before calmly maintaining her own serve and volleying away her game point. Her yell and fist pump towards her coach’s box emphasised her renewed confidence.
Despite squandering six set points, Kudermetova eventually got the job done and forced the match into a deciding set, which she won 6-1 to progress. Following Daria Kasatkina’s victory over Camila Giorgi, the victory sets up an all-Russian quarter-final.
