September 01, (THEWILL) — Defending champions, Remo Stars, came from behind to defeat newly promoted Kun Khalifat 2-1 in their Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 2 fixture at Dan Anyiam Stadium on Monday. The victory maintained the Sky Blue Stars’ strong start to their title defence campaign.
Kun Khalifat took an early lead through Henry Ezeonye’s 15th-minute penalty conversion, which marked the club’s first goal in top-flight Nigerian football. However, the Ikenne-based champions responded with characteristic determination to overturn the deficit and claim all three points from their opponents.
The result places Remo Stars on four points from their opening two matches, keeping Daniel Ogunmodede’s side within touching distance of early pacesetters Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves. Meanwhile, Kun Khalifat remain on one point following their second fixture in their maiden NPFL campaign.
Kun Khalifat, founded in 2020 and based in Owerri, Imo State, continue their adjustment to Nigeria’s premier division after promotion. Remo Stars claimed their inaugural NPFL title in April, establishing themselves amongst the country’s elite clubs.
Both teams return to action on September 7, with Remo Stars facing Warri Wolves whilst Kun Khalifat take on Kwara United. The current season is the 54th edition of Nigeria’s top-flight football competition.
