April 28, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi’s potential return to Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain may not be as simple as some may have hoped, according to La Liga president, Javier Tebas.
While the La Liga boss acknowledged that the move is possible, he added that it is complicated due to the financial situation at Barcelona. La Blaugrana currently find themselves in a difficult position, having exceeded their salary cap significantly.
As a result, the Catalan side understand that they must reduce their wage bill before any new signings or contract renewals can be completed. Despite this, Barcelona are believed to be working tirelessly to bring Messi back to Camp Nou, with club President Joan Laporta personally interested in making it happen.
For any deal to go through, however, it must be approved by La Liga. Tebas has explained that there will need to be departures of players and a decrease in the wage bill before Messi’s return can be approved.
Barcelona are reportedly exploring various options, including offering Messi a secondary role behind the scenes, to help offset the cost of his contract on paper.
