April 08, (THEWILL) – Frank Lampard’s highly anticipated return to Chelsea turned out to be a disappointment, as the Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux on Saturday.
Lampard’s promise of a fresh start did not materialise as Chelsea’s lacklustre performance was punished by an outstanding first-half strike from Matheus Nunes, in an otherwise underwhelming affair.
Though Chelsea dominated possession in the early stages, they struggled to make any real impact, allowing Wolves to take control of the game. The second half saw Chelsea adopt a more aggressive approach, leading to two counter-attacks from Wolves, who failed to add to their lead due to poor decision-making.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were unable to break down Wolves and rarely looked like a threat, with their only shot on target coming from Joao Felix’s first-half strike. Despite finishing the game with over 60% possession, Chelsea were left with nothing to show for their efforts, as Wolves embraced the pressure and consistently cleared their lines.
Chelsea now face a more daunting challenge when they meet Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, where the Spanish giants have been exceptional this season. Meanwhile, Wolves take on Brentford in their next English Premier League match. Lampard will need to find a way to turn things around quickly, as Chelsea’s performance on Saturday, left much to be desired.
