January 17, (THEWILL) – Erik Lamela has been named the winner of the 2021 Puskas Award for his audacious “Rabona” goal in Tottenham’s loss to Arsenal in the north London derby in March last year.
As THEWILL reported, the Argentine’s goal was part of a three-goal final shortlist for the prize, which also included Patrik Schick’s midfield strike for the Czech Republic against Scotland at Euro 2020 and Mehdi Taremi’s overhead kick for Porto against Chelsea.
However, Lamela’s “Rabona,” which nutmegged a defender on the way in for Spurs to open the scoring in a 2-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, has been named the best goal of the year from 2021.
This is not the first time Lamela, who joined Sevilla from Spurs in the summer, has scored a goal like this. In a Europa League encounter against Asteras Tripoli in 2014, he scored a “Rabona” from outside his own area for Tottenham.
