April 26, (THEWILL) – Chelsea’s struggles continue under Interim Manager, Frank Lampard, as they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Brentford on Wednesday.
The visitors managed to end their five-game winless streak with a convincing performance and moved above Fulham into ninth place, becoming the top club in west London. Meanwhile, Lampard’s side remains stuck in 11th place and are six points away from the top half of the table.
The match got off to a slow start, with Chelsea carving out a half-chance in the 23rd minute, but it was easily saved by Brentford’s David Raya. The visitors had a similar opportunity soon after, but poor marking from the hosts saw them escape unscathed. Chelsea was reduced to long shots and speculative efforts, and Brentford took advantage, taking the lead just before halftime after Mathias Jensen’s corner deflected off Cesar Azpilicueta’s arm and into the net.
Lampard responded at halftime by making some changes, but Chelsea was unable to break down a stubborn Brentford defence. The visitors added a second goal in the 78th minute through Bryan Mbeumo, and Chelsea’s woes continued.
The Stamford Bridge faithful quickly began to leave the stadium, and Lampard, who has lost all five of his games as caretaker manager, will be left scratching his head ahead of their next game against Arsenal on Tuesday. Brentford and Nottingham Forest will lock horns on Saturday.
