November 13, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling 2-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday, substitute Alejandro Garnacho scored a very late game-winning goal to send Manchester United into fifth place ahead of the World Cup break.
Early on, Christian Eriksen’s first United goal gave Erik ten Hag’s squad the lead, but Dan James, a former winger of the Red Devils, scored for the hosts and levelled the score two minutes after joining the game from the substitutes’ bench to take Harry Wilson’s place.
Following that, Fulham seemed to have a better chance of winning as United relied on the alertness of goalkeeper David de Gea, whose many saves kept them in the game at 1-1. Then, Garnacho stepped up to score in stoppage time to silence Craven Cottage.
The 18-year-old’s cool finish brought United to within three points of the top four teams in the English Premier League, giving the Red Devils confidence going into the six-week break.
As EPL football breaks for the World Cup, United climb to fifth but trails the top four by three points. An EFL Cup match against Burnley will be their first match back following the break. Fulham remains in ninth place and their next game will take place in December against Crystal Palace.
