May 13, (THEWILL) – Leeds United’s survival hopes remain in jeopardy even though Rasmus Kristensen’s late equaliser salvaged a point in a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at Elland Road.
The result did little to lift Leeds out of the relegation zone with only two matches left in the English Premier League season. The game got off to an explosive start for Leeds, with captain Luke Ayling opening the scoring in the seventh minute. However, their lead was short-lived as Patrick Bamford failed to convert a penalty, and Callum Wilson capitalised on two spot-kicks to give Newcastle the advantage.
Leeds showed flashes of their early-season form, but missed opportunities and defensive lapses haunted them throughout the match. Newcastle threatened on several occasions, and it seemed Leeds’ fate was sealed when Wilson converted his second penalty in the 69th minute.
However, the determined home side refused to give up, and Kristensen’s deflected strike from outside the box restored parity. There is still much to do to stay in the top flight and it will take all of Sam Allardyce’s experience to make it happen.
Leeds will face Brighton and Hove Albion next, while Newcastle are set for a showdown against West Ham.
