September 03, (THEWILL) – Lazio pulled off a shock 2-1 victory over reigning champions, Napoli, in an enthralling Serie A clash on Saturday.
Despite Napoli dominating the early proceedings, it was Lazio who took a surprise lead through a sublime Luis Alberto back-heel flick. Napoli soon equalised via a Piotr Zielinski strike, but Lazio retook the advantage after the break, thanks to Daichi Kamada’s composed finish.
The match began with Napoli firmly on top, carving out several openings. However, against the run of play, Felipe Anderson burst down the right and pulled back for Alberto to flick home with a cheeky backheel. Napoli responded quickly, Zielinski’s shot taking a double deflection to beat the keeper. Felipe Anderson and Ciro Immobile both went close for Lazio before the break.
Within a minute of the second half, there were chances at both ends. But it was Kamada who restored Lazio’s lead, slotting home after being set up by Anderson. Lazio had two further goals disallowed for offside, while Pedro missed a golden late chance to extend their lead.
In the end, Lazio hung on for a famous victory despite waves of late Napoli pressure especially from their marksman Victor Osimhen. The result sees the champions drop their their first points of the campaign. Meanwhile, Lazio will be delighted with their first points having previously lost to Lecce and Genoa. Play in the Serie A will return after the international break.
