June 07, (THEWILL) – Leeds United are facing charges of failing to control their crowd following an incident involving a fan and Newcastle boss, Eddie Howe, at Elland Road during a recent English Premier League match.
West Yorkshire Police have charged the fan with assault, and Leeds have subsequently banned him for life after he entered the technical area to confront Howe during a 2-2 draw last month.
On Twitter, the England Football Association Spokesperson announced the charges against Leeds. The club is accused of misconduct related to crowd control during the May 13 tie. The allegations state that Leeds failed to ensure orderly conduct from their spectators and/or supporters, including those claiming to be affiliated with the club, and did not prevent the use of improper, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, insulting, or provocative behaviour.
Leeds were given until June 14, 2023, to provide a response to the charges. Newcastle boss, Eddie Howe, expressed his concerns about the safety of players and staff following the incident. Reflecting on the confrontation, Howe said: “I actually can’t remember whether he pushed me or not, I’ve got no idea. It’s such a strange thing because you’re concentrating on the game and you don’t expect it to happen.”
The Magpies’ manager emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of staff and players in all Premier League and Football League matches, urging a focus on security and improvements in safety measures.
