September 30, (THEWILL) –Â In the round two of the UEFA Europa League Group C fixture played on Thursday at the Stadion Miejsky, Legia Warszawa defeated Leicester thanks to a fine goal from Mahir Emereli.
The loss leaves Leicester with just one point from two games, and third in the group. Legia lead with six points from two.
Brendan Rodgers made six changes to the side that drew with Burnley the week before. Leicester were second to the ball, slow to respond, and lacked precision all night.
The hosts, on the other hand, were buzzing with energy and ideas, so it was no surprise when Emereli outwitted both Daniel Amartey and Jannik Vestergaard before blasting past Kasper Schmeichel on the half-hour mark.
After the break, Leicester improved, especially with the introduction of James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, but they still struggled to create as Legia sat back. Jannik Vestergaard missed a free header from a corner, but the advantage was maintained with surprising ease, and the home side squandered two excellent chances to wrap up the game in the closing minutes.
As a result, Legia will feel close to qualifying, whereas Leicester still have a long way to go.
Patson Daka was a constant threat throughout the game, despite Leicester’s dismal performance. He made space for himself and angles for his teammates with his deft touch and deft movement, and he looked for all the world like a Premier League player.
The problem for him and Brendan Rodgers is that Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy, Leicester’s top scorer last season and most consistent striker in recent years, are in front of him. Daka is likely to return to the bench for the weekend match against Palace, but only for a short period of time.
The visitors definitely missed the midfield linkup play and advance of Wilfred Ndidi just as the striking option upfront was lacking Iheanacho’s bite.
