September 08, (THEWILL) – With a contract that runs through June 2024, Marco Rose has been named as RB Leipzig’s new head coach in the Bundesliga.
After Domenico Tedesco was fired on Wednesday, replacing Jesse Marsch in the position, but holding it for only nine months, Leipzig moved quickly to fill the void. Tedesco paid the price for their season’s shaky start, which included just one victory in their first five Bundesliga games and a 4-1 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk to open their UEFA Champions League run.
Rose, a Leipzig native, who left Borussia Dortmund in May after just one season in charge, despite finishing in second place, takes his position. Rose is well-known in the Red Bull organisation because he previously led Salzburg after rising through the ranks of their youth-team coaching staff.
Rose is popular for his work in Austria, where he won two top-flight championships and the Austrian Cup. He then moved to Borussia Monchengladbach prior to the 2019/2020 season. In his first season in charge, he led Gladbach to a fourth-place finish, and even though they finished ninth the following year, a run to the UCL knockout rounds led Dortmund to make an approach.
Last season, Dortmund came in eight points short of champions Bayern, and the two parties parted ways. However, Rose will now have another chance at a significant Bundesliga position with Leipzig.
