September 04, (THEWILL) — Daniel Levy has stepped down from his position as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur following nearly 25 years in the role. The 63-year-old’s departure marks the end of a significant period that began when he joined the board in December 2000 after ENIC acquired a 27 per cent stake from Sir Alan Sugar. Peter Charrington will assume control of the club through a newly-established non-executive chairman position.
Levy’s tenure witnessed substantial transformation at the north London club, most notably the construction of their 62,000-capacity stadium which opened in April 2019. The club reached the UEFA Champions League final a month after the stadium’s opening, though they suffered defeat to Liverpool. Tottenham lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy earlier this year, adding to the 2008 League Cup triumph during Levy’s leadership.
The outgoing chairman faced mounting pressure from supporters last season, with multiple protests organised outside matches criticising his management approach. Fans expressed frustration over the club’s wage structure, which remained considerably lower than their primary competitors, and the frequent turnover of head coaches. Thomas Frank became the 14th permanent manager under Levy’s stewardship when appointed in June following Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal just two weeks after the Europa League victory.
Tottenham has undergone extensive restructuring this summer beyond Levy’s departure. Chief Football Officer Scott Munn left alongside Postecoglou, while former Arsenal executive Vinai Venkatesham joined as chief executive officer. Donna-Maria Cullen, described as one of Levy’s closest allies, announced her exit in June after serving 19 years as a board member.
Levy’s exit raises questions about Tottenham’s ownership structure moving forward. The chairman previously revealed in April 2024 that he had engaged with “prospective investors” regarding potential stake sales in the club. Charrington acknowledged the recent changes while emphasising the need for stability and supporting the executive team under Venkatesham’s leadership.
