April 30, (THEWILL) – A 3-1 loss against Mainz was not exactly how recently crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich planned to celebrate their first victory lap after clinching the Bundesliga for the 10th consecutive time last weekend.
However, for their inimitable goal-machine, Robert Lewandowski, there was still reason to celebrate as the Pole broke the record for most away goals in a Bundesliga season with his 33rd-minute goal.
Even though the goal was nothing more than a consolation for Bayern, it brought his tally of away goals to 18 for the season. With the goal, Lewandowski now has 34 league goals this season, and while there is not enough time to match his previous season’s record of 41 goals, he is far from finished.
Chelsea’s Timo Werner held the previous record of 17 away goals with RB Leipzig in the 2019/2020 season, when he equalled Jupp Heynckes’ record from the 1973/1974 season with Borussia Monchengladbach.
This record-setting follows Lewandowski’s receipt of the Laureus Exceptional Achievement Award for 2022, which he won over Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic, and Max Verstappen.
With 18 away goals already this season, Lewandowski will have one more chance to add to his record on the final Bundesliga matchday of the season, when Bayern face VfL Wolfsburg.
It is unclear whether Julian Nagelsmann will make additional rotations in the final two games of the season, but based on the team he started with against Mainz, it is easy to assume Lewandowski will spearhead Bayern’s attack in those two games.
He will undoubtedly want to take advantage of those two chances to add to both his league tally and the Bundesliga’s all-time record for away goals in a single season.
