January 07, (THEWILL) – A lighting failure at the Reina Sofía stadium forced the abandonment of Villarreal’s Copa del Rey round of 32 clash with third-tier Unionistas de Salamanca on Sunday.
The match was level at 1-1 in extra time when the fault plunged the venue into darkness, leading officials to postpone the tie.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed in a statement that “a problem occurred regarding the lighting” at the stadium as the reason for calling off the match early into extra time.
The fixture was poised at 1-1 after 90 minutes, with 6,000 Unionistas fans watching their team peg back the La Liga visitors in dramatic fashion late on.
Unionistas, currently playing in Segunda División B, provided a valiant display on home turf before the unfortunate scenes.
