February 22, (THEWILL) – Liverpool showed their championship credentials by coming from a goal down to comprehensively beat Luton Town 4-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night. The victory opens up a four-point lead at the top of the English Premier League table for Jurgen Klopp’s men as they continue their quadruple chase.
With star attackers, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota all missing, along with other key players, Liverpool were stunned when Luton’s Chiedozie Ogbene headed the visitors into a surprise 12th minute lead. However, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo netted within two minutes of each other just before the hour mark to swing the game in the home side’s favour. Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott then wrapped up an ultimately comfortable three points with late goals.
The win takes Liverpool four points clear of reigning champions, Manchester City, who have a game in hand, at the Premier League summit. It also gives them a five-point buffer on third-placed Arsenal, but the Gunners also have a match to make up on their title rivals. With squad rotation a must during this hectic stage of the season, Van Dijk and Gakpo stepped up when their team needed them most.
Klopp was already dealing with a lengthy absentee list prior to Saturday’s 4-1 success away at Brentford, which saw Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all pick up injuries. Top scorer Salah returned in that game after a hamstring problem but suffered a setback which ruled him out of facing Luton. With so many attacking outlets missing, the onus was on Luis Diaz to provide the spark in the final third but the Colombian endured a frustrating first half.
After securing a vital three points, Liverpool can now turn their attention to the first of a possible four trophies this term – the League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.
