July 02, (THEWILL) — Liverpool have appointed Giovanni van Bronckhorst as assistant coach and welcomed back Xavi Valero as goalkeeping coach, completing a significant restructure of their backroom staff. The Dutch tactician, who spent two seasons at Arsenal between 2001 and 2003, returns to the English Premier League after spells managing Feyenoord, Rangers and Besiktas. Van Bronckhorst replaces John Heitinga, who departed to become Ajax head coach in June.
The 50-year-old former Netherlands international brings extensive experience from his 106-cap playing career and subsequent coaching roles across Europe. His managerial highlight came with Rangers’ remarkable Europa League final run in 2022, where they defeated Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga and RB Leipzig before losing to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties. Following his dismissal from Besiktas in December 2024 after five months in charge, van Bronckhorst has been working as a UEFA analyst.
Valero returns to Anfield after a seven-year absence, having first joined Liverpool in 2007 under Rafael Benitez. The Spanish goalkeeper coach subsequently followed Benitez to Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid before moving to West Ham United in 2018. His appointment represents a homecoming for the experienced coach, who spent over a decade working alongside Benitez at Europe’s elite clubs.
The appointments mark a complete overhaul of Liverpool’s goalkeeping department, with both Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel departing after just one season under manager Arne Slot. Otte had joined from Borussia Monchengladbach in summer 2024, while Brazilian World Cup winner Taffarel had been at the club since 2021, initially serving under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
Van Bronckhorst will work alongside existing coaches Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs, bringing his possession-based 4-3-3 philosophy that aligns with Slot’s tactical approach. The former Barcelona and Feyenoord player’s attention to detail in knockout competitions and experience at clubs with high expectations strengthens Liverpool’s coaching setup ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign.
