Champions League - Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen

June 05, (THEWILL) – Liverpool have rejected an approach from Barcelona to open negotiations over the potential signing of winger, Luis Diaz. The Spanish champions made contact with the English Premier League champions on Wednesday but were told in clear terms that Diaz is not for sale. With three years left on his contract and a central role under new head coach Arne Slot, the Colombian remains part of Liverpool’s long-term plans.

Diaz arrived from FC Porto in January 2022 on a five-and-a-half-year deal. While no progress has been made on a contract extension, Liverpool are not under pressure to sell. Sources at the club confirmed there is no appetite to part with a player expected to feature prominently in the 2025/2026 campaign. Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, received a swift response when he made the initial inquiry.

The Colombian international was previously of interest to Manchester City and remains on the radar of clubs in Saudi Arabia. His current valuation has been informed in part by the recent interest shown in Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes by Al Hilal. While Liverpool would consider serious bids, no such offer has yet materialised.

Diaz has made no public suggestion that he wishes to leave Merseyside. The 28-year-old played a prominent role during the 2024/2025 season, helping Liverpool win their 20th English title. Internally, the club believe they are better served retaining Diaz unless an opportunity arises to acquire a replacement of equal or greater impact.

Liverpool’s football operations are now led by sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group executive Michael Edwards. Both are understood to be in favour of maintaining squad stability in the short term. With Diaz contracted until 2027 and no signs of discontent from the player, Liverpool appear content to hold firm through the summer window.
