September 16, (THEWILL) – Liverpool came from behind to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 and move to the top of the English Premier League table in a dramatic match at Molineux.
The hosts took an early lead through Hwang Hee-Chan, who converted Pedro Neto’s cross after a swift counter-attack. Wolves were in control for most of the first half and missed a golden chance to make it 2-0 when Matheus Cunha headed wide from close range. The visitors were poor in the opening 45 minutes, but improved after the break and equalised through Cody Gakpo, who tapped in Mo Salah’s low cross.
The Reds then completed their turnaround in the final minutes, with Andrew Robertson scoring after a one-two with Salah and Hugo Bueno deflecting Harvey Elliott’s shot into his own net. It was a harsh result for Wolves, who had matched Liverpool for long periods and caused them problems with their pace and intensity.
However, the visitors showed their resilience and quality to snatch a vital win and maintain their title challenge. Manager Jurgen Klopp had criticised the fixture schedule before the game and his frustration would have increased after his side’s sluggish start. But he made a positive change by bringing on Luis Diaz at half-time and was rewarded with a much better performance from his team.
Wolves boss Gary O’Neil had masterminded a win over Liverpool last season with Bournemouth and looked set to repeat the feat with his new club. But he was left disappointed by his side’s wastefulness in front of goal and their inability to hold on to their lead. On Thursday, Liverpool open their UEFA Europa campaign away at LASK in Austria while Wolves visit Luton next in the EPL.
