March 15, (THEWILL) – Liverpool thrashed Sparta Prague 6-1 at Anfield in the Europa League last-16 second leg, with Mohamed Salah scoring a historic goal and assisting two more in a dominant display.
The Reds were already comfortable after a 5-1 first-leg win, but they blew the Czech champions away with a four-goal blitz in the opening 13 minutes. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring, followed by goals from Bobby Clark (his first for the club), Cody Gakpo and Salah himself.
Salah’s strike was his 20th of the season in all competitions, making him the first Liverpool player to achieve that feat in seven consecutive seasons. He also laid on assists for Clark and Gakpo in the early onslaught.
The visitors had a fleeting perception of a lifeline through Veljko Birmancevic’s goal on the stroke of half-time, but Liverpool restored their four-goal lead early in the second half thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s deflected effort.
Harvey Elliott then teed up Gakpo to add further gloss to the scoreline, with the Dutch forward taking his tally for the season to 13. Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with his side’s attacking display, particularly with a crucial FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester United coming up on Sunday.
