February 25, (THEWILL) – Jurgen Klopp has admitted that missing out on a top-four spot and failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League could have an impact on Liverpool’s ability to rebuild their squad.
However, Klopp insisted that they cannot use this as a major excuse for their current struggles. The Reds have had a disastrous season in the English Premier League, currently sitting in eighth place and seven points off the top four. Their weaknesses were exposed on Tuesday night, when they suffered their worst-ever European defeat at home, losing 5-2 to Real Madrid in the first leg of their UCL last 16 tie.
Despite their struggles, Liverpool are still keen on bringing in new talent, with the club hopeful of beating Real Madrid and Manchester City to the signing of Jude Bellingham. Klopp said: “It’s not helpful [if Liverpool misses out on the top-four]. Money always has an impact. But this cannot be that much of an impact, let me say it like this. Of course, it is influential but this is a summer where we have to be in the market, definitely.
“I am sorry that we cannot guarantee the Champions League at this moment but it’s not done yet. We will fight for it so we don’t have to talk about it as though it is not possible. We have to start doing work earlier than before we know where we will end up position-wise and European competition-wise, so these things are clear here.”
The Reds will look to bounce back from their defeat against Real Madrid as they prepare for their trip to face Crystal Palace on Saturday in the EPL.
