October 22, (THEWILL) – Atalanta secured a 2-0 victory over Genoa in Serie A on Sunday in a scrappy encounter that saw the home side struggle to break down a resolute Genoa defence. Ademola Lookman ultimately bundled the ball over the line in the second half after an initial VAR review controversially disallowed the goal. The three points were sealed late on when Ederson calmly slotted home to give Atalanta the win.
The first half saw Atalanta control possession but fail to carve out many clear-cut chances. Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali was forced into good saves to deny Teun Koopmeiners and Lookman. At the other end, Caleb Ekuban wasted Genoa’s best opportunity when he fired over.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Atalanta still struggling to breakdown Genoa’s rear guard. Aleksei Miranchuk and Giorgio Scalvini both went close to breaking the deadlock. Rade Dragusin also produced a perfectly timed tackle to deny Lookman.
Lookman did eventually give Atalanta the lead when he scrambled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble, with VAR overturning the referee’s initial decision to disallow the goal. Genoa almost equalised when Albert Gudmundsson’s curling effort clipped the post.
However, Ederson secured the three points for Atalanta with a composed finish late on after being set up by Mario Pasalic on the counter attack. A gritty performance sees Atalanta claim local bragging rights and climb up to sixth.
