January 04, (THEWILL) – Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Romelu Lukaku apologised for saying he was dissatisfied at the club in the viral interview that ruffled feathers in the Stamford Bridge dressing room as the striker returned to training.
In an authorised interview to Sky Italia earlier this season, Lukaku had stated that he was “not happy” with his situation at Chelsea under Tuchel, while also expressing an interest in returning to Inter Milan in the near future.
The timing of the interview’s release, which focused primarily on Lukaku’s time at San Siro, seemed odd, given Chelsea’s current struggles with COVID-19 and injuries limiting Tuchel’s choices.
In his initial response, Tuchel thought the interview was a needless distraction and therefore chose to rest Lukaku for the match against Liverpool on Sunday.
THEWILL recalls that on Monday, Tuchel spoke with Lukaku on the subject and has now stated that the striker apologised to him after Lukaku was left out of the 2-2 tie against the Reds.
The Belgian forward practised with his Chelsea teammates on Monday and will do so again on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.
“I am happy that we took the time to talk calmly about it,” Tuchel said. “That’s what we did. He apologised and is back in the squad for training later today.”
