May 15, (THEWILL) – Dwight Yorke, a former Manchester United striker, was named head coach of Macarthur FC in the Australian A-League on Sunday for a two-year contract.
It is the first senior coaching position for the former Trinidad & Tobago international. He is no stranger to Australian football, having played for Sydney FC in the first A-League season of 2005-06, when the Sky Blues won their maiden title.
Yorke will also coach the A-League All Stars against Barcelona in a friendly on May 25 in Sydney.
Speaking on his appointment, the 50-year-old said: “Having played in the inaugural A-League men’s season, I have continually followed the competition, and am aware of both the footballing and fan demands in Australia.
“I look forward to adding a positive contribution and improve the game at all levels.”
Yorke also played for Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, and Sunderland in England, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FA Cup.
