August 06, (THEWILL) – In their final pre-season friendly ahead of the 2023/2024 season, Manchester United faced a tough challenge against Athletic Bilbao, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

The match saw an intense start with Facundo Pellistri and Jason Sancho leading United’s counter-attacks. United created several opportunities and maintained a high line in defence but struggled to convert chances into goals. A foul by Alvaro Fernandez granted Bilbao a free-kick, which was saved by United’s goalkeeper, Tom Heaton. A defensive error by Harry Maguire allowed Nico Williams to score, giving Bilbao an unexpected lead.

In the second half, a red card for Aitor Paredes after a challenge on Hannibal Mejbri left Bilbao with 10 men. United continued to press forward and finally found the equaliser when a well-timed header from Maguire set up Pellistri for the crucial goal.

Although Erik ten Hag’s team dominated play, their inability to find the winning goal raised questions about their finishing and execution in the final third. Despite that disappointment, United’s performance with a fair representation of their up-and-coming players, highlighted the potential of their young talents and the team’s attacking ability as they prepare for the upcoming season.
