April 20, (THEWILL) – Manchester City advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich, at Allianz Arena, on Wednesday.
Erling Haaland, who scored in the first-leg win, found the back of the net to give City the lead after missing a penalty earlier in the match. Joshua Kimmich converted a penalty to end City’s winning run, but it was not enough for Bayern, who crashed out 4-1 on aggregate.
Bayern dominated the early exchanges, with Kingsley Coman posing a constant threat from the right-wing. Dayot Upamecano was given a red card for a professional foul on Haaland, but it was chalked off as the striker was ruled offside. Haaland’s penalty miss in the first-half was awarded after Upamecano was harshly judged to have handled the ball in the area.
However, City produced a superb counter-attack in the second-half with Kevin De Bruyne setting up Haaland to score his 48th goal of the season. Kimmich’s penalty set up a nervy finish, but it was City who advanced to face Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Bayern, who were hoping to progress in their bid for a seventh European title, failed to overturn the 3-0 deficit from the first-leg.
Man City’s next match is in the FA Cup against Sheffield United on Saturday, while Bayern will take on Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on the same day.
