November 16, (THEWILL) – The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy has been charged with two further charges of rape.
In August, THEWILL reported that Mendy had been charged with four counts of rape and one act of sexual assault, and City had suspended him shortly after.
The 27-year-old is presently being held on remand at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool, where he has been denied bail three times since the charges were first filed. On November 17, he will appear in Stockport Magistrates’ Court.
Mendy joined City in 2017 for £52 million and has already made 50 Premier League appearances. He was a member of the France team that won the World Cup in Brazil in 2018.
He last played for City on August 15, when they lost 1-0 at Tottenham.
“Manchester City can confirm that, following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation,” the club said shortly after suspending the midfielder in August.
“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comments until that process is complete,” the official club statement added.
