June 27, (THEWILL) – Just as West Ham United did to Arsenal, the English Premier League side has declined Manchester City’s offer for midfielder Declan Rice.
As THEWILL reported on Monday night, City submitted a formal proposal, consisting of an initial £80 million fee with an additional £10 million in add-ons. Earlier this month, Arsenal had their club-record bid, which amounted to £90 million, turned down by West Ham, which created an opportunity for City to make their move.
Rice, whose contract with West Ham expires in 2024 with an option for a one-year extension, is expected to leave the club, as stated by West Ham Chairman, David Sullivan, after their Europa Conference League victory. Yet, the outright rejection of Manchester City’s offer indicates West Ham’s determination to retain Declan Rice, who is considered one of Europe’s top midfield operators in disrupting opposition attacks.
With 245 appearances for West Ham since his debut in 2017, Rice’s contribution extends beyond defensive duties. Known for his ability to win the ball back and initiate attacking moves, his exceptional game-reading skills, anticipation, timing, and decision-making have made him an invaluable asset to the team.
Operating in West Ham’s typical 4-2-3-1 formation alongside Tomas Soucek, Rice forms a defensive triangle to build from the back and consistently provides an option to receive passes. His midfield presence effectively thwarts counter-attacks, showcasing his quality in breaking up play. It is unclear whether City will bid higher or leave the bidding war for Arsenal to continue.
