June 02, (THEWILL) – The clear out at Manchester United continued on Wednesday with the confirmation that Jesse Lingard will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.
Lingard has been with United for over 20 years, having started with our Under-9s team in 2001, underlining his reputation as a true Red. He made his senior United debut in 2014 under Louis van Gaal, following multiple loan spells in the Championship, and became a regular presence in the first team the following season.
During the 2015/2016 season, he scored six goals in 40 appearances across all competitions, signed a new long-term contract with United, and made his senior England debut in a 2-0 win over Malta.
Jesse made his 100th appearance for United a year later, and perhaps had his best season of his career just before Christmas in 2017, scoring nine goals in 13 games for Jose Mourinho’s and even won a Player of the Month award. He also scored a crucial late goal at Leicester to seal United’s Champions League status and put an end to a dramatic 2019/2020 season.
Lingard returned to United after a loan deal at West Ham only to haunt the Hammers by scoring an 89th-minute winner in a tense match at the London Stadium. It was the last of 35 goals he scored for the club he joined at just eight years old. At 29, he leaves after 232 United matches and 32 England caps.
A club statement thanked him for his time at Old Trafford. It read: “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse for all of the memories he’s helped create during his two decades here and wish him the best of luck in his future career.”
