April 23, (THEWILL) – Manchester United secured their place in the FA Cup final after a nail-biting penalty shootout win against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
Victor Lindelof scored the decisive penalty at Wembley Stadium, taking United to a record-equalling 21st FA Cup final. It was a closely fought contest with the first 12 spot-kicks of the shootout being scored before Solly March missed his penalty, leaving Lindelof with one more conversion to win the match.
Brighton had started the match the stronger of the two sides, dominating possession with a risky approach of playing out from the back. However, they were unable to turn their control into chances in the first half. United’s Marcus Rashford had a frustrating afternoon, but the game’s best chance fell to Danny Welbeck who headed over from close range against his former club.
Manchester United have already won the League Cup this season and will now face their city rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final. Pep Guardiola’s side are also gunning to become the first team since Manchester United in 1999 to win the treble of the English Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, which will give the Red Devils even more incentive to prevail on June 3.
The next match for Brighton will be on Wednesday against Nottingham Forest, while United face Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
