September 05, (THEWILL) – Manchester United are facing another personnel headache after allegations of assault were made against winger, Antony, by an ex-girlfriend, just weeks after deciding to part ways with Mason Greenwood.
The Brazilian has been dropped from the national squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers after the claims by Gabriela Cavallin. All eyes are now on how the Old Trafford club will respond after announcing last month that Greenwood, arrested in January 2022, would leave United by mutual consent due to similar assault claims.
Antony has denied physically assaulting Cavallin, but messages published in the Brazilian press appear to show the player apologising. Cavallin also shared a photo of herself with a head wound. Greater Manchester Police said they are “aware of the allegations”.
The 23-year-old, who joined United last year for €95 million, has struggled for form this season. But football matters are likely to be secondary as United weigh up their options, having come under fire for their handling of the Greenwood case.
With United not playing again until 16 September, they have some time to make a decision. But the allegations represent yet another unwanted distraction in a tumultuous start to Erik ten Hag’s reign. The manager is already dealing with injuries, poor early-season form and a public spat with Jadon Sancho.
