August 29, (THEWILL) – Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has been named in the Cameroon national team squad, despite announcing his retirement from international football last December.
As THEWILL previously reported, the 27-year-old was involved in a disagreement with head coach, Rigobert Song, over tactics during the World Cup in Qatar last year, which led to Onana leaving the tournament early and stating his “story with the Cameroon national team had come to an end”.
However, Onana is now set to return to the national fold ahead of their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Burundi on September 12. This is for the continental football showpiece that has been postponed to January 2023 in Ivory Coast.
It is not yet known if Onana has made himself available again for Cameroon and will join up with the squad. He has 34 caps for his country and won Cameroonian Footballer of the Year in 2018.
Onana signed for United this summer in a £43.9m deal plus €4m in add-ons, having previously played for Ajax. His only World Cup appearance was in Cameroon’s opening 1-0 defeat to Switzerland. The upcoming AFCON qualifier versus Burundi will indicate whether the disagreement between Onana and Song has now been resolved.
