May 21, (THEWILL) – Manchester United is considering a move to entice David de Gea into accepting a contract that would significantly reduce his salary, but keep him at Old Trafford.
As part of the compensation package, the club could offer him the opportunity to have a testimonial, resulting in a substantial one-time payment. The renowned goalkeeper earning £375,000 per week would see his income decrease by almost half under the proposed deal.
Negotiations for a new contract between the 32-year-old and United have hit an impasse. Although he wishes to continue playing at Old Trafford, concerns have emerged within De Gea’s camp regarding his status as the team’s top goalkeeper next season. While United manager Erik ten Hag has publicly expressed support for the Spanish player, speculations have arisen about the club’s interest in alternative options.
In their pursuit of a goalkeeper, Manchester United is said to have dispatched scouts to monitor the performance of Diogo Costa from Porto. Additionally, the Red Devils have reportedly shown interest in Jordan Pickford, England’s number-one goalkeeper representing Everton.
David Raya from Brentford has also been mentioned as a potential candidate, but there are rumours that incoming Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is the preferred choice to attract the Spanish shot-stopper.
