January 24, (THEWILL) – Manchester United forward, Anthony Martial, has been ruled out until April after undergoing surgery on a groin injury, the English Premier League club confirmed on Wednesday. The 28-year-old French striker, whose contract expires at the end of the 2023/2024 season, has struggled for form and fitness this campaign, netting just twice in 19 appearances.
Martial has been missing from manager Erik ten Hag’s first-team plans since being substituted to jeers during December’s 3-0 home loss against Bournemouth. Manchester United have now announced the former AS Monaco man faces around 10 weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from his operation.
A club statement read: “Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has completed successful surgery to address a groin complaint and will be out of action for about 10 weeks as he rehabilitates. We wish Anthony a speedy recovery and look forward to his return.”
Martial initially impressed after his big-money move to Old Trafford in 2015. But his United career has tailed off in recent seasons, with the French international scoring 90 goals in 317 games across all competitions.
With Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund the only senior striking options available, manager Erik ten Hag could look to bolster his forward line this January. However, any incomings would need approval from billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, whose company Ineos is poised to take control of football decisions as part of a minority shareholding.
