June 30, (THEWILL) – Marseille Football Club have announced the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager. The Italian tactician, formerly of Brighton and Hove Albion, has signed a three-year contract with the French club.
The 45-year-old took over from Jean-Louis Gasset at the helm of the 1993 UEFA Champions League winners. The club had earlier this week revealed an “agreement in principle” with the coach, and have now officially confirmed his arrival.
In a statement on their website, Marseille expressed their delight at securing De Zerbi’s services. The Italian coach reciprocated the sentiment, citing the club’s history, passionate supporters, and the enthusiasm shown towards him as decisive factors in his decision to join.
De Zerbi’s appointment is seen as a significant coup for Marseille, who finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season and missed out on European football. The former AC Milan and Napoli midfielder had been linked with the Chelsea job before Enzo Maresca’s appointment.
At Brighton, De Zerbi led the team to an FA Cup semi-final and secured Europa League qualification for the first time in the club’s history. Marseille will be hoping he can replicate this success and help them regain their position among France’s elite clubs.
