Aubameyang

August 01, (THEWILL) — Olympique Marseille have confirmed the return of striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a free transfer, marking his second spell with the club.

The 36-year-old, who previously joined Marseille in 2023, spent the 2024/2025 season in Saudi Arabia with Al Qadsiah before terminating his contract earlier this month.

The Gabonese’s return bolsters Marseille’s attacking options ahead of the new Ligue 1 campaign.

Aubameyang enjoyed a prolific 2023/2024 season with Marseille, scoring 30 goals across all competitions, a feat last achieved by Didier Drogba two decades ago.

His form earned him a move to Al Qadsiah in July 2024, but the deal was cut short after just one year. Marseille moved swiftly to re-sign the veteran forward, who remains a key figure in their squad.

The club released a statement on Thursday confirming Aubameyang’s return, though the length of his new contract was not disclosed.

Marseille manager Paulo Fonseca is expected to rely on the striker’s experience as the team aims to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish. Aubameyang’s leadership and goal-scoring ability will be crucial in a squad undergoing gradual rebuilding.

Aubameyang was born in France but represented Gabon internationally. He brings a wealth of experience from clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona.

His previous stint at Marseille revitalised his career after a difficult period in England. Fans will hope his second spell delivers similar success, particularly in European competitions where Marseille will compete in the Europa League.

The move signals Marseille’s intent to remain competitive despite financial constraints in Ligue 1. Aubameyang’s return adds firepower to a side that scored 68 league goals last term.

His reunion with Fonseca, who worked with him briefly in 2023, could prove pivotal in the club’s ambitions for the 2025/2026 season.
