April 30, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan’s hopes of securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League received a timely boost with a resounding 3-1 victory over Lazio in the Serie A that saw Lautaro Martinez finish with a brace.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan had earlier put Inter ahead, but his effort was disallowed for offside after a VAR review. Despite the setback, Inter dominated the early exchanges, but Lazio’s quick counterattacks proved dangerous, and Felipe Anderson’s goal in the 30th minute left the hosts with an uphill task.
Although Inter created several chances to level the scores, their attacks were repeatedly foiled by Lazio’s staunch defence in the second half. But the home side finally broke through in the 77th minute when Lautaro Martinez scored the equaliser, before Robin Gosens and Martinez again added two more goals in a late rally to seal the win.
It was an excellent game again for Belgian forward, Romelu Lukaku. The resurgent 29-year-old, who is looking like the player that helped Inter to the title two seasons ago, once more, helped the old champions take the lead with two assists in the 78th and 83rd minutes while putting the Lazio backline under pressure throughout the match.
The victory moved Inter up to fourth behind Juventus in the Serie A table, and level on points with fifth-placed city rivals, AC Milan and Jose Mourinho’s Roma in sixth. The Nerazzurri will look to build on their momentum when they face Hellas Verona next, while Lazio will take on Sassuolo.
