July 28, (THEWILL) – Manchester United has officially given Lisandro Martinez his new jersey number.
On Wednesday, Martinez’s €55 million transfer from Ajax was officially announced, but up until this point, United had withheld his squad number. He will wear jersey number six, that much is certain today. Pogba most recently wore that number when he joined Juventus on a free transfer this summer after his contract with Manchester United expired.
In the past, Jonny Evans, Wes Brown, and Rio Ferdinand have all worn the number 6, though just for one season before switching to five. The number was worn by Duncan Edwards in the past as well as United fan favourite Jaap Stam from 1998 to 2001.
Martinez declined the chance to keep the number 21 jersey he wore at Ajax, which is now available at Old Trafford as a result of Edinson Cavani’s departure. There is the possibility that he did this to make room in the starting lineup for Frenkie de Jong, who has been heavily linked to a transfer to Old Trafford.
The team is still interested in De Jong, but the transfer is being delayed by disagreements over contracts between De Jong and Barcelona.
