June 13, (THEWILL) – Kylian Mbappe has categorically stated that he has never engaged in discussions regarding his stay with the club beyond 2024.
The player, who signed a lucrative contract with Paris Saint-Germain in 2022, that includes two guaranteed years with the option for a third, has apparently decided against triggering this option. In a statement to Agence France Presse, Mbappe stressed the point that his decision to leave PSG in 2024 had been made known to the club’s management since July 15, 2022.
“The management of the club in charge of the extension (was informed), as of July 15, 2022, of the decision (not to continue beyond 2024),” Mbappe clarified. He further asserted that the recent letter sent to PSG merely served as confirmation of what had already been discussed verbally. The deadline for Mbappe to confirm his departure was in July, and for the option to be valid, both the player and the club needed to agree.
The revelation of Mbappe’s departure plans has sent shockwaves across Europe, with Real Madrid expressing keen interest in the player after losing Karim Benzema to the Saudi Pro League. Yet, even with their long-standing admiration of the French forward, Real Madrid are reportedly hesitant to pay an exorbitant fee for the 24-year-old. It is worth noting that Mbappe was expected to join Real Madrid as a free agent in a year’s time.
However, with the recent developments and Mbappe’s letter, PSG now face the possibility of having to sell the talented player this summer to avoid losing him for free next year. Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, had previously stated his intention to sign Mbappe in the future, as THEWILL reported, but the player’s announcement has brought him closer to an exit from Parc des Princes.
