Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe

February 15, (THEWILL) – Kylian Mbappe has notified Paris Saint-Germain President, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, of his intention to depart the French club upon the expiration of his contract this upcoming summer transfer window, according to sources close to the situation.

The 25-year-old phenom had previously pledged to personally inform Al-Khelaifi once he came to a final decision regarding his future with the club. It is now understood that Mbappe made clear his desire for a change of scenery come season’s end during recent discussions.

While precise terms surrounding Mbappe’s PSG exit have yet to be finalised, he is not expected to sign a short-term extension containing a guaranteed sale clause. Mbappe also maintained to Al-Khelaifi that he has not already come to terms with another club, despite strong interest from Real Madrid.

Internally, PSG officials have been preparing contingency plans involving potential big-name replacements like Victor Osimhen and Marcus Rashford. Simultaneously, the club aims to transition towards promoting more homegrown young talents such as 17-year-old French midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery.

Should Mbappe leave on a free transfer this summer as expected, PSG already have legal protections in place stipulating that the striker must return around €80 million to the club. Still, his departure would save PSG close to €200 million annually in wages as the club charts a new direction post-Mbappe.
