November 02, (THEWILL) – McLaren celebrated a remarkable victory at the Sao Paulo sprint race, with Lando Norris leading teammate, Oscar Piastri, to claim the top two positions. The British driver reduced Max Verstappen’s Formula One championship advantage to 45 points during the Brazilian event.
Piastri, who started from the pole position, maintained control until the final moments when he strategically yielded to his teammate. The decision proved crucial, particularly with Verstappen advancing through the field after passing Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari for third position. The race concluded with Norris finishing 0.593 seconds ahead of Piastri, while Verstappen followed 0.904 seconds behind.
“Oscar deserved it but we’re doing what we had to do,” Norris stated following his triumph. “I think we were clearly quicker than the guys behind, it’s just difficult in the sprint race knowing how much to manage and push but we executed it well.” The victory marked the first occasion in 2024 where Verstappen did not win a sprint race.
The final stages brought additional drama when officials announced an investigation into Verstappen regarding a potential virtual safety car violation. The incident occurred after Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas stopped beside the circuit. This investigation could result in a five-second penalty, potentially moving Verstappen to fourth position.
The remainder of the field saw Carlos Sainz finishing fifth for Ferrari, followed by Mercedes driver George Russell in sixth. Pierre Gasly claimed seventh for Alpine, while Sergio Perez completed the points-scoring positions in eighth for Red Bull. The weekend continues with qualifying and the main Sao Paulo Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday.
